Honouring National Indigenous History Month

Although National Indigenous History Month is observed each June, the importance of learning about and honouring First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples extends throughout the year. It is an opportunity to reflect on the rich histories, cultures, languages, and contributions of Indigenous communities across Canada, while continuing to learn with openness, humility, and respect.

For many Canadians, National Indigenous History Month serves as a reminder that learning is an ongoing journey. Taking time to listen to Indigenous stories, traditions, and lived experiences helps deepen our understanding of the resilience, strength, and diversity of Indigenous communities across the country. It also encourages meaningful conversations about reconciliation, respect, and healing.

At Spero Counselling & Psychotherapy, we believe that every person’s story matters. A sense of belonging, cultural identity, and feeling seen and heard are important aspects of emotional well-being. We are committed to fostering a welcoming, inclusive environment where individuals from all backgrounds are treated with dignity, compassion, and respect.

While we recognize that there is always more to learn, we believe that even small steps—reading a book by an Indigenous author, attending a local community event, or listening to Indigenous perspectives—can help build understanding and strengthen our communities.

Learning about Indigenous histories and cultures does not end when June is over. Reconciliation is an ongoing commitment to listening, learning, understanding, and walking forward together. We encourage everyone to continue exploring Indigenous perspectives and supporting opportunities for meaningful connection throughout the year.

Together, we can help create communities where hope, respect, and belonging continue to grow.
